International Law
It seems odd that there should be so much resistance to the simple idea that international courts should be established and empowered to resolve the conflicts that must inevitably arise between nations. Coercion and violence are the alternatives, so this lack of support for international law is unfortunate indeed. It is, of course, the powerful nations that are the most reluctant to commit themselves to the establishment of a system of international law that is truly effective. Wealthy nations tend to see the establishment of international law as a loss of their own “sovereignty.” By “sovereignty” the powerful nations really mean their right to rule the weaker ones. It is important that all nations – the powerful as well is the weak – come to realize that in the modern world a strong system of international law is the only road to long term security.
