Access To Resources and Services
That modern society can boast of techniques for preventing illnesses, medicines that can cure diseases and surgical procedures for fixing a host of problems is worth nothing to a person who does not have access to medical resources. In too many places the “haves” have medical care and the “have nots” do not.
Likewise if a modern society is able to produce a sufficient amount of food to feed it’s citizens, and adequate amounts of housing to shelter them, but does not have programs in place that make these resources available to people who are sick, or retired, or unemployed, then people will suffer from want in the midst of plenty.
Additionally it should be noted that probably the biggest single factor that leads people to have smaller families is the assurance that it is not necessary have to have lots of children to look after them in their old age. As overpopulation is clearly a serious threat to the viability of the earth’s ecology, this is no minor consideration.
For the reasons cited above, all responsible modern nations either have, or are in the process of developing, universal health care programs and programs of social insurance that guarantee a safety net under all their citizens.
